Adventure therapy when embraced, is a life-changing tool that shakes up the mindset, overturns limiting beliefs, enables self-discovery and ultimately develops resilience and trust when challenged by the vast landscape.

What does Hypar Wild strive to do for individuals/ communities?
HYPAR Wild is an outdoor adventure program that provides therapeutic and adventurous experiences to young people. Our nurturing approach on outdoor, self-paced and adventure-based activities is central to our model of care. Our programs help individuals discover and challenge their limits in a safe outdoor environment. Participants benefit from fun and exciting leadership skills-based activities- strengthening personal satisfaction and self-awareness through connections to the self, with others, and to the natural environment. Adventure therapy is a series of high-risk activities with a magical formula that aids youths at risk. It is a proven formula that’s been tried and tested. The therapeutic benefit that comes from the activity - the challenging moments , self discovery, relationship building, sitting in awe of the vast landscape are just some of the magical benefits. How did this organisation begin? HYPAR Wild is a program offered by the broader organisation- Hypar in Queensland, Australia. Since 2008, Hypar have successfully provided male mentoring, support and respite for males aged 6 to 30 years, who have complex needs and challenging behaviour. Working from a strengths-based approach, our programs offer positive male role models for male youth, particularly for those who may have lacked such positive influences in their lives. Since our inception, Hypar have encouraged supportive partnerships, confidence, independence and resilience in our clients by undertaking adventure therapy as part of their engagement with us. Activities being offered include abseiling, kayaking, mountain biking and hiking. |
How does adventure therapy help people?
Youths and older individuals who experience trauma responses as a result of adverse life events, can struggle with a range of mental health problems. This can often affect nearly every aspect of their lives. Adventure therapy can provide people with opportunities to establish a better sense of their own direction, and closer movement toward well-being. Outdoor adventure brings people together in an organic way, and in raw natural environments. There is something unique about the rapport you can build with a young individual as they take their first step abseiling, or simply hiking through Australian bush land. There is a sense of connection that is difficult to build anywhere else. Another key ingredient is in your own lived experience- having your own story and life experiences to tell and using that to help younger people facing various challenges and situations in their lives. It is all about being able to show empathy, role-modelling trust and collaboration. That alliance can encourage a young person to open up and seek help. It takes persistence and patience and can be a challenging many of the times. Individuals who have been through adverse experiences in their lives face a myriad of issues around safety and trust. Adventure therapy and the outdoors can offer a new world for them to find their own security and comfort zone. Restoring a sense of control within themselves while learning the skills of self-development and freedom of expression. |
