I think that mental health will always be a battle for me, but I know that through getting outside and experiencing nature that I can handle anything that comes my way.
Mental health is something that I have battled my entire adult life. Anxiety and depression have been the two main antagonists in my journey to find peace and happiness. It came to a sort of climax a couple years ago when I was asked for a divorce and I ended up at a crossroads: Either let these disorders consume me for the rest of my life or do something about it. From that point on, I was and am still determined to rise above it. The main thing that has helped me is getting outdoors through rock climbing and hiking. It has really transformed my thinking and way of life. Throughout this journey, I was able to accomplish my first major goal: Hike Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. By the end of the day, we totalled 22 miles and 5000+ feet of elevation gain. It. Was. AMAZING. The hardest and most rewarding thing I have ever done. Since then, I have felt a noticeable shift in my life. I have felt more peace and happiness than I have in years and it's because I learned that I can overcome my fears and accomplish hard things. I think that mental health will always be a battle for me, but I know that through getting outside and experiencing nature that I can handle anything that comes my way.
